My name is Madison Oswalt and I am 18 years old. I am a senior in high school, from Ohio, and I love trapshooting. Since I am from Central Ohio, there aren’t many ATA shoots in my area during the winter months. Most all the trapshoots that I attend are in the summer. Also, as a high school student it’s hard to take time off school to be able to follow the ATA circuit all year round, so it’s important to stay active shooting in the winter. This helps me stray prepared and competitive when performance is crucial.
It’s not easy being able to continue shooting after August, like I said, all the ATA shoots near me are over by that time and school is starting back. Luckily for me, there are protector shoots throughout the winter at local gun clubs. I love going to shoot protectors because they help to keep me shooting during the off-season. Protectors are shot from the 27-yard line, which is nice for me, because that’s where I shoot at during handicap events for the ATA season.
When it starts getting closer to spring, I transition from protectors to practicing ATA disciplines, which better prepares me for the ATA season. It’s good to start that transition early because ATA disciplines and protectors are different shooting sports. I am fortunate because there is a trap house at my grandpa’s, which we can practice there anytime. This practice is essential during the off-season to keep my competitive edge.
Ater this school year ends; I’ll have graduated from high school and won’t be involved with high school sports anymore. I am excited about the upcoming season because I’ll have the entire summer, distraction free, to shoot, travel to new venues, and meet new people.

What’s your advice on getting new lady shooters involved?
Don’t be intimidated by the sport or the gun. If it’s something you think you want to try just go for it. Just find a local club and try a practice round and see how it goes. You’ll be amazed on how people are always willing to help new shooters.
What knowledge can you share that would make ladies better shooters?
Probably the most important thing getting started would be getting the gun fitted to you and figuring out your stance.
