My name is Kennison, and I’m from Flower Mound, TX. My journey into shotgun sports is a bit unconventional. I spent 12 years as a competitive gymnast, which, as you can imagine, came with its fair share of injuries. After a career-ending injury, my dad and brother pushed me to join them at the range, even though I wasn’t thrilled about the idea. I could barely hold up the shotgun on my own, so my dad helped me steady it as I pulled the trigger. I had no intention of competing, but after joining my high school’s shooting club, I found myself hooked.

The mental lessons I learned in gymnastics, such as focus and self-discipline, translated directly to shooting. What I loved most was that every time I pulled the trigger, I was competing against myself. I found a particular passion for sporting clays and began competing in NSCA tournaments. The sense of camaraderie in the shooting sports community is truly unique; everyone is there to support and encourage one another!

At 16, when I first picked up a shotgun, I never could have imagined I’d be where I am today: competing for Angelo State University for the past three years. The friendships I’ve made along the way, with teammates and fellow shooters at NSCA events, have made me feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a welcoming community. Now, I’m excited to give back. This year, I’m a volunteer coach for San Angelo’s local 4H team, hoping to inspire more young female shooters to step out of their comfort zones. You never know where it might lead.

Primary Disciplines:

Sporting Clays, and through my College Team, I shoot Skeet, Doubles Skeet, Trap, Doubles Trap, and Super Sporting.

What’s your advice on getting new lady shooters involved?

It may seem scary or intimidating at first, but you should know everyone in this sport is so kind, genuine, and are happy to help you. We all start somewhere (I couldn’t even hold up the shotgun the first time I shot). If you can find a knowledgable person to go with you, whether a relative, friend, or instructor, you will feel more confident knowing you have someone with experience behind you. This sport is honestly just so fun and the love for the game is like no other!

What knowledge can you share that would make ladies better shooters?

  1. One of the best things that I can recommend to improve your shooting, is to get your gun fitted to you properly. It was a game changer for me and many others that I know.
  2. When you are shooting, the thing that helps me the most is finding detail on the clay and focusing on that detail.
  3. Find friends or teammates that are fun to be around and are helpful to shoot with.
  4. Find a coach who speaks your language and who has the ability to guide you in learning both the mental and physical aspects of shooting.
