As long as I can remember my dad was taking me out to the range to shoot rifles and pistols then on occasion I would go out and hunt with him and his friends. When I was old enough I joined our local BB gun team and shot that for a few years. My shotgun journey started in 2018 when my dad started a 4 H shotgun club in my hometown. I was not too sure of it at first but I decided to give it a try then after a few practices I fell in love with it and decided to stick with it. Fast forward a few years, I shot my first NSCA tournament in 2020. After a few more shoots I was addicted to breaking clay targets, not only because I was doing what I love, but some of the best people in my life I met through different competitions. In fall of 2021 I went to college at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Nebraska and joined their shotgun team. I really grew into the sport and started meeting some goals while at NCTA. In fall of 2023 I transferred to Fort Hays State University and joined their shotgun club. When we are not at a collegiate shoot, you can probably find me at a NSCA event. Throughout the past few years, I have gained much experience and knowledge about shooting. My goal is to help as many shooters find the right shotgun that fits them and allows them to reach their goals.
Primary Disciplines:
I mainly shoot sporting clays, but through our collegiate team along with sporting clays I also shoot trap, double trap, skeet, double skeet, and super sporting.
About Emily
Residence/Hometown: My hometown is Norton, Kansas but I am living in Hays, Kansas during college.
University or Collegiate Shooting Team? I am an alumni from Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture and I am currently a student at Fort Hays State University.
Do you give shooting instruction? I volunteer my time to help our local 4H shotgun team but I am hoping to become NSCA certified in the near future!
Home Club: I live in the middle of nowhere Kansas so I would say my home clubs are Hays City Sportman’s Club for trap and skeet and I am at STC sporting clays in Augusta, Kansas the most for sporting clays.
What’s your advice on getting new lady shooters involved?
Don’t be nervous to try it. In my experience all the people out there are great and would do anything they can to help you learn their favorite game. Never be afraid to ask questions. It can be intimidating at first but just go for it! Take some of your friends out and just have fun!
What knowledge can you share that would make ladies better shooters?
1. Find a gun that fits you and that you are comfortable with. No one enjoys shooting when the gun is beating you up and does not fit right!
2. Surround yourself with people you enjoy and who make the sport fun! Meet new people, you never know who could become your friend.
3. Practice as much as you can. Go to shoots and get the experience, it is worth it and will help you reach your goals in the long run.
4. Find a coach to help you understand target presentations and to help you on your mental game, it is more important than you think!
5. Most of all, have fun and do not get discouraged!
